The Kharia group of people in Jharkhand are located in and around the Chhota Nagpur Valley regions and form a major linguistic and ethnic group in the state. Kharia is also spoken in parts of Orissa in Jharkhand and belongs to the Austro-Asiatic group of languages.

Despite the colonial influence in the state, Kharia in Jharkhand has remained practically unchanged over the years. The three sub-groups into which Kharia are divided include milk Kharia, Dhelki Kharia and hill Kharia. In recent years, social activists and research have brought Kharia back into the limelight. East Singhbhum, Gumla, Simdega and Hazaribagh are the districts of Jharkhand where most of the Kharia-speaking people of Jharkhand are located. Kharia customs are intrinsically related to language and the Kharias of Jharkhand are generally employed to perform major rites of the region.
